When you have received an original copy of the Letter of Acceptance from OIT, you may start to apply for your Temporary Resident Visa and Study Permit at the appropriate Canadian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate in your country. The processing time will vary and it is best to apply as soon as possible. The main requirements for the Temporary Resident Visa and Study Permit are:

WHO NEEDS A STUDY PERMIT?

Most foreign students will need a Study Permit to study in Canada. There are some exceptions:

• If you wish to study in a short-term course or program.
You do not need a Study Permit if you are planning to take a course or program in Canada with a duration of six months or less. You must complete the course or program within the period authorized for your stay in Canada.

DO I NEED A LEGAL GUARDIAN IN CANADA UNDER THE AGE OF 18?

Most students at OIT are between the age of 17 to 23.

Even though Toronto is a safe city, younger students require additional guidance and protection. Thus, an applicant less than 18 years of age must retain a Canadian Citizen or a Permanent Resident as his/her legal guardian in Canada.

This legal guardian will assume the role and responsibilities of a parent in case of emergency. When OIT arranges a guardian for you, you must stay with him/her for the period of your stay in Canada. You must pay your legal guardian a custodian fee of around CAD$1000.00 for each year of guardian service. You will have to pay for a non-refundable processing fee of CAD$200.00 for processing your legal guardianship certificate.

MINOR CHILDREN STUDYING IN CANADA

If you are a minor child already in Canada:
You do not need a Study Permit if you are a minor child already in Canada, and your parents are not “visitors” in Canada.

In Canada, each province and territory decides the age of majority. Anyone under the age of majority is considered to be a ‘minor child’.
Province: Toronto, Ontario / Age of Majority: 18

Parents (Guardian) /Custodian Permission:
If a minor child is coming to study in Canada, they will need a custodian in Canada. All minor applicants must supply a notarized declaration — one signed by the parents or legal guardians in the country of origin, as well as one signed by the custodian in Canada, stating that arrangements have been made for the custodian to act in place of a parent.

The Visa Officer must be satisfied that adequate arrangements are in place for the care and support of minor children who are unable to support themselves.

Minors Traveling Alone:
Minor children who are traveling alone must bring with them information (name, address, phone number) about the person or school that will be responsible for them. If the child is the subject of a custody order, proof of custody and the other parent’s consent must also be provided.

Minors traveling without their parents require a letter of permission from the non-accompanying parent(s) and a letter from their custodian in Canada.

Study Permit Duration for Minors:
The duration of a minor child’s Study Permit or visitor record is normally one year. If a minor child is accompanying their parents who are issued long-term Study or Work Permits, the duration should be the same as of the parents’.

Minor children from outside Canada must apply for a Study Permit if they are coming to Canada to study.

WHY DO I HAVE TO TAKE THE ENGLISH PLACEMENT TEST? CAN I TAKE IT ONLINE?

As required by the rigorous curriculum guidelines of the Ontario Ministry of Education, every international student who wishes to take an ESL credit course or a UP course must write an English Placement Test to determine their level of English Language Proficiency. Unless you have studied for more than four years in a government-accredited high school or for two years in a government-accredited post-secondary education institution where English is the official language of instruction, you can not be exempted from this requirement.

Therefore, you will have to take the English Placement Test ifyou are an international student coming from a school where the language of instruction is NOT English and yet you can not produce any certificate of an internationally recognized English test as proof of your satisfying the requirement of the English Proficiency prior to your admission.

The English Placement Test cannot be taken online because of administrative reasons.

CAN I GET A PART TIME JOB WHILE STUDYING AT OIT?

This provision applies to both privately and publicly funded institutions.

In light of the above policy and regulation, you are not allowed to undertake a part-time job while you are taking ESL and UP courses at OIT.
